U2Charist on May 11

By thebarnlv
In response to the movement to Make Poverty History and in
support of the Millennium Development Goals, The Barn faith community will host an interdenominational U2charist (“U2 Eucharist”) worship service at 5 PM on May 11, 2008. This service will engage the reflective, celebratory, and justice-seeking traditions of Christian faith through teaching, sharing, communion and song.

Held in Christian communities throughout the country, the U2charist has received international attention for its innovative use of U2’s biblically rich lyrics and message, for its ability to bring together people of many different generations and backgrounds in a context of worship, and as a tool for raising awareness and empowering communities to respond to the Millennium Development Goals.

Because May 11th is also Mother’s Day and Pentecost, the evening’s offering will be donated to charities working with mothers in the African nation of Malawi, where childbirth claims the life of one woman every hour and juvenile AIDS has reached crisis proportions.

Many churches and faith groups have joined with the global community in endorsing the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate extreme poverty and global AIDS. U2’s lead singer, Bono, founded DATA (Debt, AIDS, and Trade for Africa) to raise awareness and empower people to action.  The climax of U2’s recent Vertigo tour was Bono’s invitation to the audience to sign the ONE Declaration: “We’re not asking for your money.  We’re asking for your voice.”
